My work featured in
Computer Arts Projects magazine

Computer Arts Projects’ "Design for the Web" (issue 153) ran a two-page feature on a website for foursquare called "I Voted", for which I designed the GUI for. The article covers an interview with (at that time) fellow JESS3 designer Robin Richards who designed the site architecture & wireframes, and also the project manager at foursquare; Eric Friedman.

Richards says: "Everything had to be clean and clear so that the user understood the design, making for a fun and enjoyable experience reflecting the identity of foursquare."

Friedman says: "The site turned out better than we imagined it would and we were extremely happy with the result… By showing visually that every vote counts, we were able to inspire how people make a difference in an election."

To The Lighthouse.
Holiday cottages
in Cornwall

Client.

To The Lighthouse (UK) offer unique, eco-friendly self-catering holiday cottages and beach chalets in Cornwall.

Project.

I tried to create something a little different to set them apart from other Cornish holiday letting sites, adding character with natural tones and bespoke illustrations & icons. The website is fully content managed via WordPress, for which I built a bespoke theme.

Involvement.

Identity. Design. Build.

Tools.

Photoshop. Illustrator. Coda. WordPress.

Languages.

HTML5. CSS. jQuery. PHP.

Link.

www.tothelighthouse.co.uk

Cottage details

Each cottage or beach chalet page is effectively a website in itself, with unique domain names directing traffic to these pages in addition to the parent domain/home page. A one page setup with all the details, features, availability calendar/tariff and location details ensures a keyword rich page and ease of finding everything in one simple page.

Identity

The brand mark was intended to reflect the theme of "To The Lighthouse", which primarily refers to the famous Virginia Woolf novel. The lighthouse being at Godrevy near one of the companies’ popular beach chalets in Cornwall. But in a broader sense it refers to escaping to the Cornish coast.

The first version of the identity featured only the sea and the iconic lighthouse… However some of the companies’ cottages are inland, so the illustration was developed to incorporate the green countryside and create a sense of traveling to the coast beyond…

Colour

The colour scheme originally was black and blue to reflect the blue of the ocean and the black of the Cornish (Saint Piran’s) flag. The red was an experiment as lighthouses are stereotypically red & white striped. In the end the ‘Cornish black’ was deemed too heavy, so the green was introduced (to reflect the countryside) as a tertiary colour for icons, and the ocean blue as a secondary colour for navigational elements.

Illustration

I drew some fun, bespoke illustrations and icons to add a personal, friendly and unique feel to the website. The aged/grunge/vintage effect ties in with the interiors of the old traditional Cornish cottage interiors.

LIVESTRONG
Cancer Guide & Tracker
iPad app

Agency.

Bolster Labs (USA)

Client.

LIVESTRONG

Project.

An innovative iPad app to help cancer survivors, patients and their families, at every stage of the cancer. The app is a digital extension of LIVESTRONG‘s existing Guidebook and Planner & Journal documents that offer useful advice, support and information. Predominantly, in it’s new interactive capacity it acts as a ‘tracker’ allowing the user to track everything from their symptoms, to their treatment plans, medication, appointments, keep track of important financial information, budgets, contacts and record a journal. It’s a truly great and innovative app to help cancer patients, survivors and their families.

Involvement.

Design of all screens and scenarios.

Personal note.

This project is particularly personal to me. In a cruel, yet ironic twist of fate, I lost my Dad to a very short battle with an aggressive cancer, only a couple of months before starting on this project. It was devastating. So this project was particularly hard, but ultimately rewarding to work on.

Organisations like LIVESTRONG do great things, so wear your yellow wristband’s, spread their good word and please support them where you can.

Tools.

Photoshop.
